Bat Break

This past weekend (June 2nd) was the White Plains Relay for Life at the White Plains High School field to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Toshindo was present and active and we gave a very nice 45 minutes demonstration which included basic techniques, kumite (sparring), self-defense and tameshiwari (wood breaking).

Here is the clip of my bat break:

Back in saddle....

Finally, after several weeks with no running due to toe injury, I was able to step in my running shoes last night and hit the road for 3 miles last night. I even complemented with 2 more miles on the treadmill this morning.

I tried running on and off but my toe always hurt to much for my regular stride. Last night my toe was still sensitive but overall comfortable enough to run without modifying my stride. My pace was probably a little slower but nothing dramatic.

Now I just have to quickly build it back up to 20-25 miles per week to be back where I started.

Beast Skills

I do not have time for a long review but I found a great site with a lot of tips and tutorials on various bodyweight strength training, acrobatics, and gymnastic skills. Beast Skills is written by Jim Bathurst, a 25 year old from Washington D.C. He was part of Gymkana in college and stayed interested after.

Go take a peek and learn the handstand...

Relay for Life

In 1999, I lost my brother-in-law to leukemia, he was only 30 years old and left behind my sister and their one year old daughter. Because of this and because we truly believe we can make a difference, Sonia and I have decided to join a team in the "Relay for Life" of White Plains, taking place around the track of WPHS on June 2nd 2007.

Get-Fit-R

I found this nice fitness and nutrition blog with tons of info. I never recommend people get all their info from the same source but every source can usually provide priceless useful information. Blogs are also a nice media for this since the advice comes in, a day at a time, and slowly assimilated, as oppose to forcing yourself to digest pages and pages of data from a book or a large website.

Dojo Wisdom

Dojo WisdomI recently read a great little book by Jennifer Lawler titled "Dojo Wisdom". In it, she introduces 100 simple ways to make you a better and stronger person. The book uses teachings from the dojo and extrapolates very important life lessons applicable anywhere. In another blog, I posted about Key Principles where I mentioned I found fascinating that lessons learned to make you an expert in one area are usually easy to transpose and translate to a totally unrelated topic. This book is a good illustration of that point. And it reminds us martial artists that lessons from the dojo are important to many aspects of life.

Videos online...

I have some videos now online. I am using Revver to host them. Here is one of a fight during a semi-knockdown tournament back in May or 2004. I have the white Gi and the red headgear.

Tournament results

Well it didn't go exactly as planned... the Kata portion went well: 3rd empty handed and 1st weapon, but I did not fight. There was a lot of tough competition including guys I fought in previous tournaments. Though I knew I had a fair chance, I was not getting it done without getting hurt and I did not have it me to give up a month of recovery for bruised ribs, stiff legs and what have you...

I am very proud of everyone who competed from our school though. Everybody gave it their best and fought really hard.

I guess I'm getting older and I'll need to find other ways to challenge myself. I think I'm done with the knockdown fighting circuit.

Tournament this Sunday

I am competing in a local World Oyama tournament this coming Sunday, April 1st 2007, at the Edgewater Community Center in Edgewater NJ. The plan is to compete empty-handed and weapons kata in the morning and knockdown (probably my last fights) in the afternoon. My wife is NOT too happy about it because she ends up spending the Sunday alone to watch the kids but I promised this was the last time. Plus, she gets nervous about the Kumite. Hope all goes well... I'll try to post updates Sunday night.

Have a good weekend. OSU!

Hagakure?

This will be my martial arts, health, fitness and nutrition blog. It is meant to be a journal of my activities, my research and various things I find browsing around.

You can, and I invite you to, read a bit more about me here.

Why Hakagure? Reading this may help answer the question.
