Someone started Martial Arts Friends, a site similar to myspace but for martial artists only. It was started by a practitioner and it's geared for practitioners.

A nice place to share tips, videos, pictures and other tidbits of info.

Congratulations and keep training hard!

Our own Emily Levin recently donated about 18 inches of her hair to Locks of Love. Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Emily is a Black Belt at the dojo and is very active in her community and is always looking for ways to help others. She is the true example of the Toshindo Spirit.

Thank you Emily for being so giving!

If you or your child has done something worthy of praise or have made some sort of accomplishment outside of the dojo, let us know. I would be happy to share the accomplishment with our dojo family. email me at senseiaprieto@toshindokarate.com

Team Toshindo

Our own Danny Etkin, Brown Belt, finished a wonderful tournament year and is a member of the Krane Rating System. Danny placed 2nd in Fighting, 2nd in Kata, 1st in Open Kata and 4th in Weapons in the overall 2007 yearly Krane Ratings System. Danny received the rank of 1st in all 4 of his divisions in the 2007 New York State, Krane Rating System. Danny also placed 1st in fighting in the 2007 NASKA Rating System.
Lets congratulate him and also Sempai Aila Prieto and Matt Bernstein for their hard work during a great tournament season. I'm looking forward to next year.

If you would like to be a part of Team Toshindo talk to Shihan or me. We are still looking for some beginner competitors.
Team requirements are:
Team Gi with black Toshindo T-shirt, Team practices, Team spirit. All team members should support other team members.

I will be trying to set up team practice times for early next year. Most likely practices will take place on Sundays at various times. Until then, practice your techniques and the kata you know. Try to get your stances low and tight. Lock and hold kicks for at least 1 sec. I want all who are on the team or who want to be on the team to make a committeemen to try to attend practices and practice at home. This is the only way to improve.

Shihan and I are going to introduce some new and exciting things for the team in the next few weeks.

There is great info and pictures at the site.

We have been developing new kata for the dojo. We have incorporated "Toshindo Kentai" into our kata curriculum. We have added a few more techniques to Kentai for the competing kids and this will be called "Toshindo Kentai Dai". Most recently we introduced another new kata that had yet to be named, but I am proud to introduce "Konzai". Konzai = mixture, since the kata is a mixture of some of our existing traditional kata. I want to thank Melissa Cardon for getting that name for us.

Toshindo Halloween Party

The Toshindo Halloween party was a huge success! Everyone who attended had a great time! I would like to thank all of the people who helped make this event a success. More particularly Sempai Sonia who made the dojo a Halloween haven with the help from Sempai Amanda, and Sensei Rowan. Lets give a great thanks to Sempai Charles for helping with all of the games and keeping the kids in line and giving horsy rides. I want to thank all of the instructors, students, and parents for coming and participating. Especially the parents who took the time to put on a costume and show our kids that you can have fun too! Thank you Shihan Don for allowing us to have fun at the dojo. The party was such a success, we may be doing it again next year.

Click on this link for party pictures, thank Sempai Charles for the upload. Everyone have a safe and healthy Halloween and don't eat too much candy!

I must apologize to some parents who did not know that siblings were invited too. Sorry if this caused you any inconvenience if this was a reason you did not attend.

Upcoming Events

The next Woodbreaking night is scheduled for Friday December 7, 2007. Mark the date and come out and break some boards! We want to have more people participate in this event. Especially if you have never done it. Test your own strength, speed and accuracy. It is a fun event!

Upcoming Outside Tournaments

Next Saturday is the Oyama Karate Tournament. This is a traditional Kata, and continuous sparring tourney. Those interested in this tourney can still sign up at the door.I believe we have a good contingency going to this tournament. Wish everyone well!

If anyone is interested in fighting at this tournament please speak with me at Mondays class or Shihan or Sempai Charles, at Tuesday class. We can let you know if you are ready for this type of Tournament or get you prepared for it.

The key to fighting in this tournament is heart and stamina. You have to be able to take a hit, and I mean a good hit, and you should be able to give back as good as you get for 2 minutes without quitting. This is Shihans Fighting style. It makes you a stronger person, more confident and able to survive and/or escape a real situation, without falling apart and becoming a victim.
All competitors wear protective gear, chest protectors, and face masks for kids.

November 4, the World Oyama Tournament, in Bronx NY

Next Sunday is the Krane Nationals Tournament. This is the last tournament of the Krane year. We have competitors who will be participating and giving it their all for the last outside tournament of the year. When it is over our Team Toshindo deserves a good break. Wish them all well!

November 5, the Krane Nationals Tournament, MA
